Imagine my surprise when 12 year old me found out that you could ask things of God. A massive list compiled in my head such as the latest Total Girl magazine, Saddle Club DVDs and Harry Potter books. Why hadn’t anyone told me about this awesome aspect of God earlier?
“But…” (There is always a ‘but’ with Mums), “You have to think carefully about what you want to ask for because there are some things he just won’t do.”
So maybe asking for a magazine was the wrong thing?
Continuing, Mum explained “Every night I would pray and ask God, ‘If you’re real and I’ve been very good, please leave baby rabbits under my bed in the morning!’ and every morning I would wake up, check my bed and there wouldn’t be any baby bunny rabbits.”
Okay. So I definitely wasn’t going to get a Total Girl magazine in that case.
A little dismayed by the turn of events I approached my ever wise Nanna for a little advice in this God-situation. “You can’t ask for material things like bunnies or books,” she told me. “God doesn’t work like that. He will listen to you though". Nanna had learnt the hard way that God sometimes gives you exactly what you want, even if it is to show you it is not what you need.
Nanna continued, “Every night I would pray to God for the perfect man, MY perfect man. He had to be tall, handsome, strong jaw, dark hair, blue eyes, olive skin and well-off. What do you know, God answered my prayers, but not in a way I was expecting. I met my perfect man and realised that I had never asked for a personality, I had never asked for commonalities or true love. The person who I had dreamed to be perfect, wasn’t perfect at all. So be careful what you ask from God.”
So what do you pray for? What do you ask from God? He has a great plan for us, each and every one of us. Sometimes like Nanna, he will give you exactly what we think we want in order to show us that He knows better; that He has greater and bigger plans that we commonly can't imagine.
Be bold. Don’t be afraid to ask God for anything. Maybe in fact you are simply asking him for too little. In so many ways God craves to be felt in our lives. He wants to be in relationship with us. We can’t wait around on him to give us our ‘call,’ we must desire his presence, ask for his presence and then will answer. Someone once said to me "God will knock on your door, but He won't break it down and barge in. You have to be the one to open the door for Him to enter your life"
Our God is awesome, and truly amazing. He will answer your prayers, I have no doubt. He may not give you baby bunny rabbits, but He will provide for you.
This is my prayer every morning to God, this is what I ask and desire most from Him. He never fails to give me what I ask, no matter how big the hurdle or small the complication. So, what are you asking God for today?
Every day I need you Lord
But this day especially,
I need some extra strength
To face whatever is to be.
This day more than any day
I need to feel you near,
To fortify my courage
And to overcome my fear.
By myself, I cannot meet
The challenge of the hour,
There are times when humans help,
But we need a higher power
To assist us bear what must be borne,
and so dear Lord, I pray,
Hold on to my trembling hand
And be near me today.
